Spring 2013 Regional Training for Healthful Living Essential Standards

The 2013 Healthful Living RESA training will focus on resources, integration strategies, and legislation which impacts Healthful Living education.

The target audiences for the Common Core and Essential Standards regional content sessions include people who attended the 2012 Summer Institute. If the RESA can accommodate, districts and charters may send additional Healthful Living content teachers.

Wiki Site

  • This wiki is intended to be a resource for Health/Physical Education teachers, administrators, institutions of higher education, and other interested parties. It contains links to standards, instructional tools, professional development, and other resources related to implementing the NC Healthful Living Essential Standards. Healthful Living leaders are encouraged to browse, reference, download, share, discuss, and adapt resources. You do not need to be a member of the wiki to view the resources on this site. You do need to be a member of the wiki to share local resources in the Building Local Capacity section of the site.

Group Norms


  • As a way to complete introductions, participants will take part in either the "Categories" or "True or False" icebreaker activity, depending upon the setting. "Categories" requires more movement and space, but "True or False" provides an option for locations not conducive to a great deal of movement.
  • Participants will agree to group norms which will lead to a successful and enjoyable training experience for all.
  • We will review the NC State Board of Education Goal: NC public school students will be healthy and responsible.

Health Rocks

  • Participants will learn more about this resource which is available to schools for free through 4-H and local cooperative extension offices across the state.
  • Participants will be led through an example of the types of activities that are included in this resource.
  • Use the links in the next column to explore other sources of information regarding Health Rocks.



  • Energizers are classroom based physical activities that help teachers integrate physical activity with academic concepts. These are short (about 10 minute) activities that classroom teachers can use to provide physical activity to children in accordance with the request from the North Carolina State Board of Education's Healthy Active Children Policy.
  • Participants will be reminded of what Classroom Energizers are and provided information on how they can access electronic copies for free. You may download copies directly from the next column.
  • Information will also be shared as to how to acquire printed versions for free or for the price of shipping.
  • Hard copies of the Healthful Living Middle School Energizers will be distributed to participants, and sample hard copies will be on-hand for the other subjects as well.


Successfully Teaching Health

  • The Successfully Teaching Middle/High School Health manuals have been produced by the NC Association for the Advancement of Health Education (NCAAHE) since 1992, and they are aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study.
  • Participants will be given an overview of types of resources that are included in the 2012-13 version of the manuals.



Quick Reference Guides

  • Strategies/resources for integrating Healthful Living and a variety of other subjects will be shared.
  • The K-8 Quick Reference Guides will be shared with participants.
  • Integration Ideas Chalk Talk Walk Activity
  • Participants may use the blank copy of the Healthful Living Connections Matrix to record ideas.


Homemade Equipment

  • Physical Education resources issues will be discussed.
  • Power Points and accompanying written instructions will be shared with participants on how to economically create equipment that can be used in Physical Education classes.
  • Activity - Participants will construct a racquet to keep.
  • Other resources on homemade equipment are at right.


DPI Updates



  • Participants will be taken through an overview of North Carolina's new technology initiative which combines a student information system with an instructional improvement system.


Online PD Modules

  • Participants will be exposed to the new website for Online Professional Development Modules.


House Bill 837 - CPR Graduation Requirement

  • The resources which are located on the Healthful Living CPR wiki page will be discussed.
  • Participants will gain experience with
    hands-only CPR skills


Assessing Student Work/Assessments

  • During this portion of the training, information will be shared with participants regarding Assessing Student Growth and the associated Teacher Evaluation process.


House Bill 88 - Healthy Youth Act

  • The 2009 revisions to the Healthy Youth Act will be discussed.
  • NC data related to sexual risk taking will be shared.
  • Participants will be introduced to the National Sexuality Education Standards.

  • Visit the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina at: for teen pregnancy data in NC.


Coordinated School Health Changes

  • Participants will be made aware of upcoming changes to the Coordinated School Health program.
